Throughout history, great producers have shown up in packs. From the paypal mafia to the impressionists in the 1800s and the beat poets of the 50s, it’s a very real trend.
The writer Austin Kleon refers to this as a ‘scenius’ and without a doubt there are some forming today that will be the greats that the world will talk about 50 or 100 years ago.
Why do these work? There are a number of reasons, but priming certainly plays a big part.
Simply being around people who are holding themselves to a high standard will influence you to operate at a higher standard yourself.
To quote Jim Rohn “you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”.
One of the most ambitious studies of weight loss conducted on 12,000 people over 32 years. They found that having a friend become obese led to a 57% increase in the likelihood for one to become obese – and that the effect jumped to 171% if it was a close friend!
When you’re talking with other entrepreneurs that are achieving their goals, you’re primed to achieve your own.
What’s more, you have a yardstick with which to compare yourself. If you’re shipping something every week and your friends are shipping 3, it can light a fire under you to get you working better.
It’s impossible to know this if you’re operating in a vacuum (or worse, keeping in touch with old work friends, classmates or drinking buddies that are working in cubicle land)
Surround yourself with success and hard work and you will start to rise to your new standards.
